CHEMISTRY & AGRICULTURE LECTURE
CHEMISTRY & AGRICULTURE
Essential Question: In what ways does chemistry contribute to agriculture?
Learning Objective: Chemists have developed different ways to help agriculture develop better crops, improve soil quality and fight pests.
SWBAT:
- Investigate the requirements of crops for good growth.
- Understand how pesticides, fungicides and herbicides work and the controversies surrounding their use.
- Compare and contrast "organic" products to what consumers consider "GMO"
HMMM... BE READY TO PARTICIPATE
- Of the two tomatoes that I am holding, which one is "organic"? How can you tell?
- What do you know about "organic food"?
- What does GMO stands for? Who makes GMO food?
- How? Is GMO food good for you?
- What chemical process is the basis for all the oxygen in the atmosphere and the food we eat? What organism is responsible for that process?
- WHY should we care about all of this?
PHOTOSYNTHESIS: http://www.biology4kids.com/files/plants_photosynthesis.html
- Can you write down the chemical reaction for PHOTOSYNTHESIS? Go ahead... Give it a try!
- If there is ONE chemical reaction you need to remember is the PHOTOSYNTHESIS REACTION. WHY, YOU ASK?!?! Do you remember your Bio class? Remember ECOLOGY?
- Which organism is at the bottom of the energy pyramid? Why is that?
- Without the chemical process of PHOTOSYNTHESIS LIFE, as we understand it, will not exits
- Some anaerobic bacteria will continue to thrive but aerobic organisms will cease.
- You, your cat, your dog, the cow that provides your yummy hamburger are all aerobic organisms.
- So, again, WHY should we care about all of this?
- How can chemistry help our plant friends and the people who provide veggies for us? Can you think of a way chemistry has helped agriculture?

- WHAT DOES THE ARROW MEAN?
- COMPARE AND CONTRAST THE AREA BEFORE THE ARROW TO THE AREA AFTER THE ARROW
GMO's
- Genetic Modified Organisms (GMO's) or Genetic Modified (GM) or Genetic Engineered (GE) have been a subject of debate for decades. Are they good for you? Are they bad?
- The debate continues and it is up to the individual consumer to educate themselves and to make the right choice when going to the grocery.
- Being informed about the pros and cons give you the power to choose what it is best for you and your family.

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PESTICIDES, HERBICIDES AND FUNGICIDES?
- Another hot topic are PESTICIDES, HERBICIDES AND FUNGICIDES. Why do you think that is?
- The common sense response from consumers is: "If they kill bugs, pests, fungi... Would it kill me, too?"
- The answer to that will depend on who's paper you are reading.
- Being informed of the pros and cons, again, gives you power to make the right choice for you and your family.
