HMMM... BE READY TO PARTICIPATE

  • Have you ever been sick and taken a medicine? Who made that medicine? What are the ingredients in that medicine?
  • Have you ever had or know of someone who had surgery? Do you think chemistry has anything to do with the materials used during surgery? Can you think of how?

THE WORLD WE LIVE IN ....

  • When students ask why they need to take a chemistry class, I always say the same thing: Because YOU are chemistry and chemistry IS everywhere around you. Learning is knowing.  Knowing is powerful.
  • Today, we live in a world where we think every illness, whether it is physical or mental, can be "cured" with medicine.
  • The media is constantly advertising drugs. Why do you think that is? Who pays for these advertisements?
  • Today, there is a huge market for vitamins, supplements, creams and pills that will either make you lose weight or gain energy (or both).  Can you trust any of it?
  • You see it advertised on TV, right?  Commercials advertising for medicines for the cure of hemorrhoids to heart attacks to cholesterol to diabetes, to diarrhea (YUP!).
  • But what is MEDICINE?  Is it a pill you take when you feel sick? What really IS medicine?\

  • I think you will agree with me that MEDICINE is really, really, HARD work!
      • Next time you visit a doctor, appreciate the many years of studying he/she underwent.
  • Chemistry and Medicine work together.  But how?
